People from Beemer are employed in a variety of
occupations at a variety of places including: Attorneys, CPAs,
appliance stores, hardware stores, the nursing home, restaurants, the
bank, the medical clinic, hospitals, lumberyards, diesel repair,
insurance
agencies, and convenience stores. Beemer residents are also employed at
farming, cattle feeding, hog feeding and trucking operations. Some
Beemer residents also drive to surrounding communities to work.
The county labor force in 2000 was 5,298 with unemployment of 114 or
2.15% and employment of 5,184. The area labor force was 46,337 with
unemployment of 1,599 or 4.10% and employment of 44,738.
Wages in the area range from $6.97 to $13.05. The only union in Beemer
is the NSEA.
Beemer's population was 741 in 1990 and 773 in 2000. Cuming County
population in 1990 was 10, 117 and 10,203 in 2000. The labor market
population was 84,168 in 1999 and 88,072 in 2000.
The age distribution was 2,707 age 0-17, 652 age 18-24, 971 age 25-34,
1,307 age 35-44, 1,330 age 45-54, 1,072 age 55-64, 894 age 65-74, and
1,048 75+.
The Village of Beemer is governed by a Board of Trustees - four, each
elected to a four year term. The Trustees elect a Chairman of the Board and they
appoint a Police Chief. Beemer is also served by the Cuming County
Sheriff's Department with a deputy in Beemer. Beemer has access to the
county-wide 911 system which is located in the Cuming County Courthouse
in West Point. Beemer's fire protection is provided by a twenty-seven
member volunteer fire department. More help can be called when needed
using the mutual aid system.
The State of Nebraska has a 5% sales tax which is not applied to food
purchases. Beemer does not have a village sales tax. Beemer's real
property valuation is $117,536,423.00. 2001 tax rates are as follows:
Village .227384, county .304904, School .55 .999783, the village's share of the township .174285 for a total of 1.706356.
Beemer has no Interstate Highway or Limited Access Four-land highways
although we will have one in the next few years as Highway 275 is being
rebuilt as a limited access four-way highway. Beemer has one Federal
and one State improved two-lane highway. It is 34 miles to Interstate
I 29 and 30 miles to the nearest four-lane highway which is a section of
Highway 275 which runs through Beemer.
Beemer is served by four interstate and four
intrastate motor freight
carriers and is 1-2 days from Chicago and 2-3 days from Dallas by this
method of transportation. The nearest public airport is 60 minutes away
in Sioux City, Iowa. There is also an international airport, Eppley
Airfield in Omaha, NE which is 83 miles away. The nearest railroad is
21 miles away and is the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe.
